What $244 buys that a coach seat does not

No one charges for the sky, so a fare pays for the vehicle, the guide and what happens on a night with no lights. Here the vehicle is the reason to book. A Super Jeep can take tracks a coach cannot. hayden_j’s first stop filled up fast, with more than six vehicles and a crowd; the guide moved on to a quieter place only their vehicles could reach, with no buses. Jennifer_J spent the night off-road in snow and dark and calls that half the fun, lights or not.

Be clear about what the fare does not buy: a jeep to yourself. The night starts by meeting up with other vehicles, and the search runs as a convoy. Christine_C shared the jeep with nine others and met another carrying ten. Alan_W found the seats laid out 1-3-3-3, so not every couple sat together, and Suzanne_S had a back row with no door of its own. If your party wants its own vehicle, the private car and local guide starts from $260 a person.

Is it on tonight? The call at five

This hunt operates in all weather, so rain in the city does not by itself cancel it. Deana_H expected a cancellation because it was raining in Reykjavík; the jeep drove out to several places and found the lights. To find out whether your night is on, call +354 569 8000 around 17:00 on the day.

When the operator does cancel, notice can be short: Elaine_S heard four hours before the start. You then rebook another evening free. The same applies if the hunt runs and you see nothing. A full refund comes only if every night you booked is cancelled for weather and you never went out at all. It does not apply if you went and saw nothing, or if your second attempt is cancelled too. How late the night can run

The listed length is about four hours. The guide may stay out longer when the forecast improves: Chung_C’s guide waited for the weather predicted later in the night, and Francesca_C was out until after one in the morning. With a 21:00 start, plan for a late return. bradreinhart went out on a cloudy night and the guide found an opening in the sky, with photos at no extra cost. Food and drinks are not in the fare; Deana_H was still handed hot cocoa under the stars, so treat it as a bonus, not a promise. How your four hours in the jeep usually run

1. Around 17:00, call to check. Ring +354 569 8000 to hear whether the night is on.
2. 20:00 or 21:00, pickup. At your hotel, or the nearest bus stop where the street is too narrow.
3. Meet the other vehicles. The jeeps join up outside the city before the search starts.
4. The search. The route and the stops follow the weather and the aurora forecast.
5. Photos under the lights. The guide photographs you with the aurora behind you, when the sky allows.
6. Back to Reykjavík. Drop-off where you were collected, often after midnight.

What the fare covers

Food and drinks are not in the fare, so eat before pickup and bring a snack. Tips are not included either. Pickup is from the Reykjavík area only; if you are staying outside it, you will need to reach a hotel inside the area. The national park fees and local taxes are already paid. The jeep collects you from any hotel in the Reykjavík area. Some downtown streets are too small for a Super Jeep, so in those cases the pickup is from a bus stop nearby. Nicola_J was even collected from a hotel that was not on the list, after asking.

Pickups are where this night goes wrong most. Alan_W was moved to a bus stop at the last minute and waited while the jeep came 35 minutes late. Suzanne_S stood at one spot while the driver waited at another. Read the confirmation e-mail on the day, keep your phone on, and call if nobody comes.
