Where you sleep decides how your evening starts: at your door, at a bus stop round the corner, or at the harbour. If you are booking Reykjavik Northern Lights booking, stay inside the capital's pickup area, and check that your hotel or its nearest stop is on the list.
The land hunts collect you from the capital area. One late small group lists its zone in full: every Reykjavík postcode from 101 to 113, then Seltjarnarnes, Kópavogur, Garðabær, Hafnarfjörður and Mosfellsbær. Outside those, it does not collect at all.
Other tours draw the line more tightly. The Super Jeep collects in the Reykjavík area only, and one small group collects in central Reykjavík. So the closer you stay to the centre, the more hunts you can choose from.
Here is the catch in the centre. Tour buses may not drive or stop in parts of downtown, so most hotels in 101 are collected from a numbered bus stop within walking distance instead of the door. You are told which stop is yours when the reminder comes.
That works well if you know where the stop is before the night. Walk there in daylight on your first day. Then on the night you leave the hotel a few minutes early, in your warm layers, and wait at the right place.
Check the pickup list or your nearest numbered stop, then compare the hunts that collect from it.
The aurora boats have no pickup at all. You walk to the Old Harbour and board there: 15 minutes early for the larger boat and 30 minutes early for the smaller one. A room in the centre or near the harbour makes that an easy walk after dinner.
If you stay further out, allow for a bus or a taxi to the harbour, and add the early arrival time to your journey.
A cottage in the countryside gives you darker skies from the door. It also takes you out of every pickup zone. If you choose it, you are the hunter: you need a car, the cloud map, and a safe place to stop off the road.
A good compromise is the edge of the capital area. On Seltjarnarnes you are still inside the pickup zone of the tours that list it, and the dark western tip is close by. From there you can watch on your own on a strong night and book a hunt for the others.
